Wine

For many years, Spiro's family have lived at Pelekas beach, on the west coast of Corfu.

Producing grapes and wine has always been a passion for the family.

In years gone by, Spiro's mother, could be seen riding her donkey to her vineyards daily, nuturing and caring for the vines and producing fine home made wine for the family.

Fast forward to 2006 and once again, after a few years of producing grapes, Spiro produced the first "Sunrock" home produced wine.

This is a real family event, with everyone helping out to make the wine a celebrated activity.

Naturally, the grapes are produced organically on the Sunrock hostel farm. Once the grapes reach maturity, they are picked and transferred to the hostel producing room.

From here, the grapes are pressed using special equipment....the days of treading grapes with the feet have gone!

The grapes are placed in a presser and squeezed to obtain the juice. The juice is then placed into casks for maturing.

Over a period of months, the wine ferments, until it reaches it's optimum. This is usually around the end of January.

Once the wine is ready for consumption, a big celebration is planned, in a day when Spiro samples and shares the rewards of his hard work and passion for continuing a treasured family tradition.

The Farm

cookies

Uniquely offering meals to our guests, using produce direct from our own organic farm each day requires hard work, passion and dedication.

A few years ago, Spiro decided that this was his goal. With a love and passion for farming and a dedication to providing his guests with the best quality food, he decided to utilise a stretch of land on the island for this purpose.

Now, the farm has grown into producing and keeping a wide range of stock and vegetation.

Each year, the farm's trees produce Olives, which are gathered and used to produce our own Olive oil for cooking and collected to be served fresh to sunrock guests.

Fruit is widely grown on the farm each year, including Strawberries, Cherries and Lemons.

Additionally, Sunrock itself has an abundance of vegetation surrounding the hostel producing Lemons, strawberries and Olives, along with our vegetable plots for lettuce, Zuchini and Tomatoes.

Our farm Animals are kept in good conditions ensuring that the best quality meat is a result.

Cared for by Spiro, staff and our volunteer helpers, the animals are well looked after and treated respectfully.

Of course, the ultimate result of producing the freshest, organically produce meat is always remembered, but we believe that the animals should live in good conditions.

Our Chickens produce Eggs daily for use in our breakfasts, Our cows produce milk, again, used daily at the hostel for our guests and we produce the freshest and what is believed to be the best quality Lamb, Pork and beef on the island!

Volunteers

Farming is hard work that requires dedication and comittment.

Each year, all year round, we accept the assistance of volunteers.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of countries and backgrounds, either currently travelling or heading to Corfu for the purpose of joining us to work on our farm.

Opportunities exist all year round and in return for around 5 or 6 hours each day, we offer accomodation at the hostel in shared rooms and 3 good meals each day.

Volunteers can enjoy an active social life with the others and with the guests, including parties, beach time, resting and chilling out.

However, we ask all our volunteers to remember the main purpose of their stay...caring for the farm.

Farming is hard work and volunteers need to be flexible...animals need regular attention to a strict timetable and their needs can sometimes occour at the most demanding and unsocial hours!

But, the personal rewards are well worth the effort...imagine helping and seeing the birth of a calf and then helping it to gain strength each day.

If you believe that you have a flexible attitude, you should fit the criteria below to enquire about becoming a volunteer:

* Be aged 18 to 25 years old.

* Be available for a minimum period of 1 month.

* Be fit and active

* Be flexible in your approach to this comittment

Fit the above criteria?

Email us now, providing your details and a summary of your life experience and interests and one of our team will get back to you to discuss further.

Additionally, we require volunteer staff, on the same basis for general duties around the hostel.
